Denali Highway — Susitna River Crossing Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Around Mile 79–80 of the Denali Highway, the road crosses the upper Susitna River — a wide, glacially-fed braid that drains the central Alaska Range. Pull-offs on both sides of the bridge let you camp right on the river gravel bars or on low tundra benches above the water. The views here are as good as anywhere on the highway — the Alaska Range fills the southern horizon and on a clear day you’re looking at peaks above 10,000 feet. Grayling and whitefish in the river if you’re carrying a rod.

This stretch sits roughly halfway between Paxson and Cantwell on State-maintained gravel. No services exist within 40+ miles in either direction — fuel, water, and food must be carried. The road can be rough in this middle section after summer rains. Cell service is nonexistent. Fires are generally allowed on gravel bars with standard fire-safety precautions; check current restrictions before you go. Mid-June through August is the primary season before shoulder mud returns.
