Kolyma Highway — Serpantinka NKVD Execution Site Memorial

Point of Interest

Near the settlement of Debin, the Serpantinka site marks where NKVD operatives executed thousands of GULAG prisoners during the Great Terror of 1937–38. The name comes from the serpentine road that wound through the area. Small memorial markers have been placed here and the site is acknowledged in historical documentation on the Kolyma system. Standing at a place like this on the actual road the victims built reframes the entire journey. It’s not dramatic scenery — it’s flat taiga and a dirt pull-off — but that plainness is exactly the point.

Located in the Debin area along the R504 Kolyma Highway. Access is from the main highway, rough pull-off. No infrastructure, no signage beyond memorial markers. Serious river and road conditions dominate this stretch in spring — check conditions before departure from Magadan. Bring everything you need; services are sparse.

The terror made geographic. Pause here.
