Valle Cochrane — Río Cochrane Roadside Dispersed Camp

South of Cochrane the Carretera Austral follows the Río Cochrane through a narrow glacially carved valley before the road eventually threads south toward Caleta Tortel and Villa O’Higgins. The river corridor has several flat gravel and grass pull-outs used by overlanders as a free staging camp — either final night before resupply in Cochrane or first night out heading south into the increasingly remote stretch. The valley is dramatic: raw Patagonian granite, lenga beech and ñirre forest on the slopes, and the river running clear and cold off the Northern Patagonian Ice Field drainage system.

No facilities at any of these spots. The road surface in this section is gravel and can get rough and corrugated with washboard. High-clearance 2WD will manage in dry conditions; 4WD preferred after rain. River levels can rise quickly with precipitation — don’t camp too close to the water’s edge. Cell service is nonexistent. Cochrane (roughly 10–20 km north) has fuel, food, and basic supplies. Season runs November through April.
