Strzelecki Creek — Montecollina Bore Artesian Outflow
Montecollina Bore is an old artesian outflow that pushes warm, mineral-rich water into a channel cutting through the gibber plain. The sight of running water out here, surrounded by endless red stones and saltbush, is genuinely disorienting in the best possible way. It draws birds in huge numbers — expect corellas, ibis, and wedge-tails working the margins. It’s not a swimming hole and the water isn’t potable, but as a visual landmark and mental reset point mid-track it’s hard to beat.
Located roughly mid-track between Lyndhurst and Innamincka. The bore outflow and surrounding creek vegetation are visible from the track itself — no side trip required. Road surface is typical Strzelecki gibber and corrugation. A 4WD is mandatory out here, full stop. Check bore flow status with DEW before travelling — artesian pressure and output have changed over the years.
