Oyrargjógv to Elduvík — Eysturoy East Coast Cliffside Track

One-lane cliff shelf to the Faroes' edge village.

Expert

Elduvík sits at the end of a fjord arm on Eysturoy’s east coast and until the road came, it was boat-access only. The track from Oyrargjógv follows the fjord wall on a shelf barely wider than a Land Cruiser, with a vertical basalt drop to saltwater on one side and an equally vertical cliff above on the other. There is no passing room on most of the descent — you commit going in and you commit coming out. Rockfall debris is common after wet weather, and the surface transitions between rough gravel and bare basalt slabs. The village of Elduvík itself — roughly 30 people — sits at the water’s edge in a bowl surrounded by mountains. It is genuinely one of the most dramatic village settings in the North Atlantic.

Expert drivers only in anything wider than a compact 4WD — wheelbase matters here. High clearance, good sidewall protection, and ideally a spotter on the cliff-edge sections. Best run June through August before autumn rain turns the basalt slick. Check weather before you go — wind-driven rain on this coast is blinding. No fuel between Eiði and Fuglafjørður. No permit required but respect the villagers; this is their only road. A satellite communicator is strongly advised. Come down, have a look, turn around — there’s no loop.
