Elan Valley Reservoirs — Mid Wales Dam Road Viewpoint

Point of Interest

The Elan Valley in Powys holds a string of five reservoirs — Caban Coch, Garreg Ddu, Pen-y-Garreg, Craig Goch, and Claerwen — built between 1893 and 1952 to supply Birmingham with water. The dam architecture is genuinely impressive, and the single-track road that runs through the valley alongside the water gives you close-up views of the stone overflow weirs, the open moorland above, and the red kite-filled sky. It’s quiet in a way that most of Wales’s popular parks aren’t — no big car parks, no ice cream vans, just moving water and hills.

The B4518 and the estate roads through the valley are accessible to any vehicle and maintained year-round. Elan Village at the southern end has a visitor centre and basic facilities. The upper Claerwen reservoir sits on a rougher access track and rewards the short detour. Red kites are near-guaranteed overhead — this valley was central to their Welsh reintroduction. Goes quickly in summer weekends; midweek you may have the whole road to yourself.

Victorian dams, red kites, and blue water.
