Pennine Bridleway — Longdendale to Bleaklow Head via Torside Clough
Bleaklow doesn't hand out participation trophies.
Bleaklow doesn’t care about you. This plateau northeast of Glossop in the Peak District sits at over 630 metres and earns its name honestly — exposed, peat-hagged, and navigationally featureless in mist. The track from Torside Reservoir climbs Torside Clough before breaking out onto the open moor, threading past standing water and peat groughs that can swallow a wheel to the axle without warning. This is one of the few routes where the Pennine Bridleway alignment follows lines usable by 4WD in good conditions, pushing through to the Bleaklow Head trig point and down toward the Snake Pass (A57) on the far side. The Snake Inn — one of the most remote pubs in England — is a legitimate waypoint marker for route planning.
This is an expert-level bog crossing, full stop. Stock vehicles will get stuck; recovery gear is non-negotiable. Tyre pressures down, lockers in, and know how to read peat before you commit. Peak District National Park manages access and motorised use on bridleways is technically permitted for byway-classified routes only — check current Natural England classifications before you drive, as restrictions can and do apply. Best conditions are July through September after a dry spell. Glossop is your last fuel stop heading east. What you get is England at its most raw and uncompromising — no crowds, no reception, just moor.
