Dyfi Forest Ridgeline Road — Machynlleth to Dinas Mawddwy via Nant yr Arian Summit
Mid-Wales forestry ridge with real mud and real views.
The Dyfi Forest sits in the awkward middle of Wales — not as famous as the Brecons, not as glacially dramatic as Snowdonia, which means the ridgeline tracks up here get a fraction of the traffic and twice the mud. The route climbs east out of Machynlleth on rough forest roads, gaining the main ridge above 500 metres before tracking northeast through the Nant yr Arian forestry blocks toward the sharp descent into Dinas Mawddwy in the upper Dovey valley. The surface alternates between compacted gravel and churned-up clay sections that turn axle-deep in wet conditions — and it’s wet here most of the year. The Dyfi Valley views open up repeatedly on the southern aspects, but the real draw is the exposure and isolation up on the ridge.
High clearance is mandatory; 4WD with low range is the sensible call from October through April. Summer months make more of it accessible to a capable stock truck, but never underestimate mid-Wales clay after rain. No fuel or services between Machynlleth and Dinas Mawddwy — about 30km. The forestry roads are managed by Natural Resources Wales and Tilhill Forestry; track conditions and access gates can change seasonally. No formal dispersed camping, but roadside pull-offs exist on the upper sections. This is a solid day run for anyone looking to get off the A-roads and into genuine Welsh backcountry.
