Afan Valley Forest Road — Port Talbot to Glyncorrwg via Afan Argoed Ridgeline
Coal country ridgelines above the Afan.
The Afan Valley in Neath Port Talbot is coal country written in stone — the terraced hillsides and abandoned levels tell the story plainly enough — and the forestry roads that climb the ridges above Afan Argoed Country Park give you access to a landscape that most people only glimpse from the M4 below. The main forestry track runs northeast from the country park car park, climbing hard through managed Sitka spruce plantation before breaking out onto open ridge with views east toward the Brecon Beacons and west over the coastal plain to Swansea Bay. The descent to Glyncorrwg drops into a tight valley with a ford at the bottom that catches out the overconfident — it’s shallow in summer, knee-deep in November. Cymmer village is the midpoint marker worth knowing.
This is a moderate high-clearance run — a competent stock 4WD will handle the forestry tracks in dry conditions, but the ridge sections go soft and rutted quickly in wet weather, and Wales is wet more often than not. Natural Resources Wales manages the forest and vehicle access is permitted on designated routes; check their site or the Afan Argoed visitor centre before heading out. Bridgend or Port Talbot for fuel. The area has a long history with the mountain bike community so share the tracks — the descents that feel rideable to a biker feel trivially smooth to your rig right up until they don’t. What you get is a surprisingly wild experience inside a postcode most overlanders ignore completely.
