Sierra Nevada High Road — Capileira to Veleta Observatory via Mulhacén Approach

Highest road in Western Europe, loose and real.

Difficult

Most people in southern Spain don’t know there’s a gravel road that climbs higher than anything in the Alps. The route out of the white village of Capileira in the Alpujarras barrancos pushes north on the GR-3301 forest track, gaining elevation fast through sparse pine and into open sierra above the treeline. At around 3,000m the surface turns to compacted volcanic scree and loose rock, and the final approach to the Veleta observatory road — a sealed section that reaches 3,398m, the highest paved point in Western Europe — is genuinely exposed with steep fallaway on both sides. The views north to the Guadix badlands and south toward the coast of Africa on clear days are unreasonable. Snow covers the upper route from October through late May; the national park authority gates access at Hoya de la Mora (2,510m) during restricted periods.

A proper high-clearance 4WD is required above the Capileira upper trailhead — the track is rocky, loose, and has sections steep enough that marginal vehicles will struggle on the descent. Lockers are not essential but skid plates are. This is a Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada — no dispersed camping above the park boundary without a permit, and open fires are prohibited above 1,600m year-round. The nearest fuel is in Capileira or Trevélez; fill up before you go. Summer thunderstorms build fast above 2,500m — the mountain catches afternoon convective storms hard. Start early, watch the sky, and carry warm layers even in August.
