Ophir Pass Road — Silverton to Telluride via the Uncompahgre Plateau

Loose shale, 13,114 feet, zero margin.

Difficult

Ophir Pass sits just west of Black Bear and Imogene in the San Juan triangle of Colorado’s most punishing high-country roads, and it earns its place in that company. The route climbs out of Silverton on County Road 8, switchbacks hard through spruce and tundra, and crests a narrow rocky saddle at 13,114 feet before dropping into the Ophir Valley on loose shale shelves barely wide enough for one rig. The north side descent is the crux — steep, loose talus with significant shelf road exposure — but the views across the Sneffels Range reward every white-knuckle foot of it. The road connects to Telluride via Highway 145 and is a legitimate alternative crossing in the San Juan summer loop circuit.

This is a high-clearance 4WD trail with real consequences — a stock Jeep or similar running 33s minimum will manage it, but a lifted rig with lockers handles the loose north-side descent with far more confidence. Avoid it when wet; the shale turns greasy and dangerous. Open roughly July through September depending on snowpack. No permit required, and dispersed camping is available on the Silverton approach. Ouray or Silverton are your last fuel stops. Cell service is nonexistent on the pass. Come for the views; respect the exposure.
