Lost World Circuit – Mount Roraima Access
Access route to Conan Doyle's Lost World
The road to Mount Roraima’s base camp follows Venezuela’s Highway 10 through Gran Sabana, but it’s the final 67-kilometer push from Santa Elena de Uairén to Paraitepui village that separates tourists from overlanders. This ancient landscape of tabletop mountains and savanna grasslands inspired Conan Doyle’s ‘Lost World,’ and the route crosses countless crystal-clear creeks while skirting the base of billion-year-old tepuis that rise like stone fortresses from the plains. The Quebrada de Jaspe section requires careful navigation around exposed granite shelves that can shred undercarriages.
Don’t underestimate this route — what looks like simple dirt roads can become treacherous during rainy season (May-December) when creek crossings turn violent and clay surfaces become skating rinks. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, recovery gear essential, and fuel scarce beyond Santa Elena. Dry season (January-April) offers the most reliable access but dusty conditions. Venezuelan bureaucracy adds complexity, so research current entry requirements thoroughly. What you get is access to one of Earth’s oldest geological formations and the base camp for hiking to the top of a 2-billion-year-old mountain plateau where species exist nowhere else on the planet.
