Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest — Verlot Public Service Center
The Verlot Public Service Center is a legit USFS ranger station sitting right on the Mountain Loop Highway, a few miles east of Granite Falls. For overlanders running Mount Pilchuck, the Bedal Creek corridor, or Forest Service Road 22 toward Darrington, this is where you stop first. Staff can tell you which roads are washed out, what the snow level is, and whether the gate you’re counting on is actually open. Northwest Forest Pass required in this zone — they sell them here.
Open seasonally, typically late May through Labor Day weekend. Outside those windows, the kiosk out front has basic maps posted. The Mountain Loop Highway itself is paved to Barlow Pass, beyond which it’s gravel — conditions vary wildly spring through early summer depending on winter snowpack and runoff damage.
