Riding Mountain National Park — Ochre River Fire Road to Birdtail Escarpment Overlook

Riding Mountain National Park sits like an island of boreal forest above the Manitoba plain, and the internal fire roads that thread through its backcountry are some of the most underrated overland corridors in the Canadian prairies. The Ochre River Fire Road runs north from the park’s administrative boundary near Ochre River town, climbing the Manitoba Escarpment through mixed spruce and trembling aspen before opening onto ridge terrain with sweeping views west across the Assiniboine lowlands. Watch for wet clay sections after rain — this dirt turns greasy fast and has buried unprepared trucks axle-deep in Manitoba gumbo. The Birdtail Creek drainage crossing mid-route is the technical crux, with soft banks that demand momentum and commitment.

This is moderate terrain on a dry day, difficult when wet — a high-clearance 4WD with all-terrain tires is the realistic minimum. Parks Canada controls access, and a valid park permit is mandatory. Backcountry camping is permit-based through the Riding Mountain warden service. Best season is late June through September; spring is a muddy mess and fall hunting pressure is real.
