Chemin de la Réserve faunique de Matane — Gaspésie Interior Highland Circuit

Gaspé highland moose country on raw gravel.

Moderate

The Réserve faunique de Matane sits on the inland spine of the Gaspé Peninsula, and the network of SEPAQ-managed forestry roads threading through it is one of eastern Quebec’s most legitimate overland playgrounds. The main circuit enters off Route 299 near Saint-René-de-Matane and climbs through mixed boreal forest onto open ridge country above 700 metres. The road surface alternates between decent graded gravel and sections of exposed bedrock that will test your approach angles. The Rivière Matane crosses the route twice with concrete-bottomed fords — manageable in summer, ugly in freshet. Moose density here is among the highest in North America; slow down at dawn and dusk, full stop.

Moderate difficulty in dry summer conditions, bumping to difficult after rain when the clay-heavy sections turn greasy. A lifted truck with all-terrain tires handles it without drama. Fuel and supplies at Amqui or Matane before entry — the reserve has no services. SEPAQ charges a daily access fee; pay at the entrance kiosk on Route 299. Best window is mid-June through late October. Designated camping with pit toilets is available at several interior lakes. Cell service drops to zero within the first 10 kilometres of entry.
