Deh Cho Route — Fort Providence to Fort Simpson via Mackenzie Highway Backcountry Spurs

Big River country — bison, boreal, and zero crowds.

Moderate

The Deh Cho — ‘Big River’ in Dene — has been a travel corridor for thousands of years, and the gravel spur roads branching off Highway 1 between Fort Providence and Fort Simpson give you a taste of that heritage. The main highway is gravel most of the way and rough enough to punish an unprepared truck, but the real rewards come off the beaten track: spur roads dropping toward the Mackenzie River flats at spots like Mills Lake and the Jean Marie River confluence, where wood bison graze the meadows and the river stretches a kilometre wide. The Sambaa K’e (Trout Lake) spur off Highway 1 near Checkpoint adds serious remoteness to the equation — 90km of rough track each way into Dehcho First Nations territory.

This is a Moderate to Difficult route depending on how deep into the spurs you push. The main highway is manageable for a stock 4WD high-clearance truck but the river-access spurs require real clearance and recovery gear. The shoulder seasons — May and October — can turn the clay-based spur roads into wheel-swallowing bogs. Summer is the go-to season but bring your A-game for mosquitoes from June through August. Fuel up hard in Fort Providence and again in Fort Simpson because there’s nothing between them. No permits required, dispersed camping available on Crown land off the spurs.
