Aishihik Lake — Aishihik Road Lakeshore Viewpoint and Historic Village Site
Aishihik Lake is a long, cold, glacier-fed lake sitting in the plateau country between Haines Junction and the Kluane foothills — big water in a landscape that doesn’t advertise itself. The lakeshore pullouts along the Aishihik Road offer clean views across to the Miners Range and are a legit staging and rest point for overlanders running the Dezadeash Lake to Bates Lake Road or pushing toward the Donjek Route. The area also holds historical significance as a traditional home of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, with remnants of earlier habitation near the southern shore.
Aishihik Road branches off the Alaska Highway and is generally maintained gravel — passable for most rigs in dry season. Expect washboard and soft shoulders in wet conditions. No services along the lake itself. A small territorial campground (Canyon Creek) sits partway down the road and makes a reasonable overnight stop. Best from late May through early October before freeze-up makes access unpredictable.
Cold glacial lake, First Nations country.
