Kluane Lake — Boutillier Summit and Duke River Valley Overlook

Point of Interest

Northbound on the Alaska Highway between Haines Junction and Destruction Bay, the road climbs to Boutillier Summit and opens up one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Yukon. The Duke River valley cuts west toward the St. Elias Mountains, and on a clear day the glaciated summits of Kluane National Park fill the entire southern skyline. This is a genuine pull-over-and-stare moment. The wide gravel shoulder gives room for rigs with trailers. It’s also a good spot to glass for Dall sheep on the slopes above the valley floor.

Connects directly to the Kluane Lake North Shore Road corridor and the Donjek Route staging areas around Destruction Bay. The Dezadeash to Bates Lake backcountry routes are accessed further south from Haines Junction. Year-round road, but the summit can ice hard early October through May — check conditions with Yukon 511 before running it in shoulder season.

St. Elias giants fill the windshield here.
