Carcross to White Pass Summit — Montana Mountain South Face Mining Road

Exposed ridgeline mining scars above Bennett Lake.

Expert

Montana Mountain rises sharply above Carcross and the Nares Lake narrows, and its south-facing slopes are laced with prospecting roads from early-1900s silver and galena operations that predated the famous Klondike rush. The route leaves Carcross heading south on the Tagish Road before branching onto a deteriorating mining track that climbs steeply through subalpine fir into open scree. The upper reaches pass collapsed prospect adits, rusted ore chutes, and at least two distinct cabin remnants before hitting a ridgeline bench with unobstructed sightlines across Bennett Lake toward White Pass. On clear days you can pick out the old White Pass & Yukon Route rail grade below.

The upper road is steep, loose, and narrow — think exposed shelf road on crumbling shale with no room to pass oncoming traffic (unlikely but possible in summer). This is expert-level terrain: lockers, skid plates, and a full recovery kit are mandatory, not optional. The lower mining track is accessible to capable high-clearance trucks but the upper bench requires locked diffs and experience on exposed routes. No permits, no services, no cell service. Carcross has fuel and limited supplies. Best run late June through mid-September — upper elevations hold snow well into June and see early accumulation by October. Worth every bit of the grind up.
