Coal Creek Mining Road — Dawson City to Coal Creek Historic Dredge
Drive to a frozen-in-time gold dredge, Dawson backcountry.
Dredge No. 1 on Coal Creek has been sitting in the gravel it last worked in 1986, and the road to reach it hasn’t changed much since. Branch east off the Klondike Highway south of Dawson City, cross the Yukon River by ferry, and follow a deteriorating gravel track up the Coal Creek drainage — about 50 km of creek-bottom road that floods low spots, undermines the track after snowmelt, and rewards patience with one of the most authentically preserved industrial relics in the Canadian North. Parks Canada manages the dredge site under the Klondike National Historic Sites umbrella; the machine is enormous, intact, and absolutely worth the drive. The route itself follows the creek through mature spruce forest with views up into the Dawson Range.
Moderate difficulty with one genuinely technical section where the track narrows above a creek bank drop. High-clearance 4WD recommended; a stock crossover won’t make the final 15 km in wet conditions. The Yukon River ferry at Dawson City runs seasonally — confirm operating dates before committing to this loop. Best run July through September. No dispersed camping at the dredge site itself (Parks Canada), but you can camp on crown land in the approach corridor. Carry water; Coal Creek isn’t reliably clean. Zero cell service once you cross the river. This one’s for the history-obsessed driver who wants something more than a roadside placard.
