North Canol Road — Ross River to Macmillan Pass

WWII ghost road through Selwyn Mountain wilderness.

Extreme

Built in 1942 to supply the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells, the North Canol Road (Yukon Highway 6 North extension) runs from Ross River northeast to Macmillan Pass at the Northwest Territories border. This is the real thing — a deteriorating wartime track across open tundra, through steep-walled river canyons, over unmarked fords of the Macmillan and its tributaries, and into the Selwyn Mountains with no maintained infrastructure whatsoever. The road was officially decommissioned and the Yukon government issues annual advisories warning drivers it is not maintained. Washed-out bridges, deep mudholes after rain, and fords that can run knee-deep on a truck are standard features. The approach through the Tay River valley is spectacular before the terrain turns brutal past the Dragon’s Back ridge.

This is a multi-day expedition requiring two capable vehicles minimum, full recovery kits, satellite communicators, and pre-trip registration with RCMP or a trusted contact. Fuel from Ross River must carry you the entire route — the nearest resupply is Macmillan Pass or back. Best window is mid-July through early August before fall rains return. Solo attempts in single vehicles have ended badly. What you earn is arguably the most dramatic and historically loaded wilderness drive in the entire Yukon — and bragging rights that are completely legitimate.
