Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area — Kamloops Viewpoint and Staging
Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area sits on the benchlands north of Kamloops and is one of the largest protected grassland ecosystems in BC. For overlanders, it functions as a scenic staging area and day-use destination with network of dirt tracks through rolling open terrain above the Thompson River valley. The views back over Kamloops Lake are genuinely impressive — big open sky, sparse pines, and the kind of wide-open BC interior landscape that doesn’t get much press. No formal campground inside the protected area, but the site is used by riders, hikers, and those airing down for the two-tracks through the grasslands.
Access is via Lac du Bois Road off Highway 5A north of Kamloops. Vehicles need to stay on marked routes — this is sensitive bunchgrass habitat and the BC Conservation Officer patrols it. Best in spring and fall when the heat is manageable. Ticks are present in spring. Good cell signal on high ground above town.
Big sky grasslands above Kamloops — rare BC terrain.
