Hoodoo Mountain — Iskut River Canyon Viewpoint
Hoodoo Mountain is a shield volcano and lava dome that erupted as recently as 100 years ago — the most recently active volcano in Canada east of the Coast Mountains. From Highway 37 south of Dease Lake, the thing just rises out of the boreal like it doesn’t belong there, which it basically doesn’t. Pull over and take a minute. The Iskut River canyon stretches out below and the scenery is legitimately remote and raw. There’s no developed pullout, just a gravel shoulder, so park solid and don’t block the road.
You’re deep in Tahltan First Nation territory here and the landscape reflects it — undeveloped, uncrowded, and real. This stretch of the Cassiar is worth slowing down for regardless of where you’re headed. Good reference point for trip planning between Meziadin Junction and Dease Lake.
Canada's youngest volcano, raw Cassiar country.
