Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 734 Blackstone Gap to Grave Flats (Alberta)

Blackstone River crossings and elk country solitude.

Moderate

North of Nordegg, Highway 734 punches deep into country most people only see on a map. The Blackstone Gap to Grave Flats stretch is where the road earns its reputation — narrow shelf sections above the Blackstone River, creek crossings that vary wildly with snowmelt, and views across open meadows that make you question why you’d ever go back to pavement. Grave Flats itself is a broad alpine bench ringed by unnamed ridges where elk and moose outnumber vehicles by a comfortable margin. The Blackstone River crossing mid-route is the decision point: in June it’ll test your recovery gear, by late summer it’s a manageable wade.

This is a legitimate high-clearance route — a stock 4WD with decent all-terrain tires and a skid plate is the minimum. Lift and lockers help in wet conditions. The road is unsurfaced gravel and clay that turns greasy fast in rain. Best run July through September when water levels drop and mud dries. No permit required. Fuel up in Nordegg before you leave — there’s nothing out here. Cell service is nonexistent. Dispersed camping is available throughout; the meadows at Grave Flats are worth an overnight fire and a cold morning before you push further north.
