Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 734 Brazeau River to Berland River Junction

Boreal isolation, river crossings, zero signal.

Difficult

This stretch of the Forestry Trunk Road north of the Brazeau River is the kind of drive that separates the overlanders from the day-trippers. Launching from the Brazeau River bridge area northwest of Nordegg, the route threads through active forestry blocks, old coal-mining cutlines, and boreal wilderness before hitting the Berland River junction north of Grande Cache. The Berland River crossing itself is the crux — it’s a legitimate ford that demands a read before you commit, and in June runoff it will swallow a stock rig without hesitation. Expect rough, deeply rutted gravel with washboards that’ll rattle your fillings loose and mud holes that appear without warning after rain.

You need a true high-clearance 4WD here — a lifted truck or dedicated overland rig with a snorkel is the right tool for wet-season attempts. No permits required, but fuel up in Edson or Hinton before you leave; there is nothing out here. Best window is late July through September after snowmelt settles. Cell service is effectively nonexistent the entire route. Dispersed camping is available throughout the forestry reserve. What you get is one of the most isolated northern Alberta drives possible without crossing into the Northwest Territories.
