Forestry Trunk Road — Nordegg to Ram Falls Provincial Park

Coal country to canyon — Alberta's foothills at full volume.

Moderate

The Forestry Trunk Road (Highway 734) through this corridor is one of Alberta’s most storied backcountry corridors, and the run south from Nordegg to Ram Falls Provincial Park is a prime slice of it. You roll out of Nordegg — a near-ghost town built on Brazeau coal money — through dense lodgepole pine, crossing the North Saskatchewan River drainage before dropping into the Ram River Valley. The Ram River itself is the key waypoint: its limestone canyon is sudden and dramatic, and the Ram Falls — a wide, powerful curtain drop into a tight gorge — is the kind of thing that makes you glad you didn’t skip it. The road is predominantly maintained gravel with stretches of washboard, creek dips, and soft shoulders after rain. It’s not a rock-crawling run, but it demands attention.

A stock high-clearance 4WD handles this in dry conditions, but wet weather turns the clay-heavy sections greasy and the creek crossings rise fast after storms — a lifted rig with all-terrain tires is the smarter choice. There’s no cell service through most of the corridor. Dispersed camping is available along the route; Ram Falls Provincial Park has a proper campground. Best run June through September — spring snowmelt makes early-season crossings dicey. Fuel up in Nordegg or Rocky Mountain House before heading out. This is classic Alberta foothills overlanding: big sky, elk everywhere, and zero crowds on a Tuesday.
