Desolation Sound Marine Access Road — Homfray Creek FSR

Desolation Sound without the boat crowd.

Difficult

Most people reach Desolation Sound by boat. You’re going in the hard way — up the Homfray Creek FSR off the Powell River backcountry, threading through second-growth timber and blow-down zones on a road that hasn’t seen a grader in years. The surface shifts from packed gravel to loose shale to mud-slicked clay depending on season, and a washed-out creek crossing near the 18 km mark has ended more than a few trips for rigs without a solid locker and recovery gear. The reward at the end is a quiet tidal flat with a direct view into one of BC’s most spectacular marine protected areas — with exactly zero other trucks in sight.

This is solidly moderate-to-difficult terrain — stock lifted 4WD with all-terrain tires will manage in dry conditions, but after August rains it steps up fast. Bring a hi-lift, traction boards, and a chainsaw if you’re running it in spring when widow-makers litter the road. No cell service from the turnoff. Fuel in Powell River before you go; there’s nothing out here. Best run July through early September. No permits required but the FSR is active logging in sections — watch for trucks on blind corners.
