Likely to Quesnel Lake Road

Deepest fjord lake in the world — almost no one drives it.

Moderate

Quesnel Lake is one of the deepest fjord lakes in the world and most overlanders have never heard of it — which tells you everything you need to know about this road. Starting from the old gold-rush settlement of Likely, roughly 90 km east of Williams Lake, the route follows the Quesnel River corridor past Cedar Point Provincial Park and traces the lake’s north arm on a mix of maintained gravel and raw dirt logging track. The Cariboo-Quesnel River junction viewpoint is a mandatory stop. Farther east, the road deteriorates as you approach the Horsefly River confluence area, where soft clay soils after rain turn the surface into ankle-deep ruts in minutes.

A standard high-clearance 4WD will handle this in dry conditions; in wet weather you want lockers and a recovery kit. No fuel past Likely — top up and carry a spare 20 litres minimum. Cell service is gone within 15 km of Likely and doesn’t come back until you exit near Horsefly. The Cariboo interior shoulder seasons — late May to early June and October — can make this route genuinely dangerous. Mid-July through September is the sweet spot. Dispersed camping along the lakeshore is spectacular. Come for the solitude, the absurdly blue water, and the Gold Rush history baked into the landscape.
