Nootka Sound Forest Service Road

Rainforest logging roads to the edge of the Pacific.

Difficult

Nootka Sound is where European and Indigenous history collided on the BC coast, and the road to get there feels about as forgotten as that history. Starting from Gold River on central Vancouver Island, this route threads active and deactivated logging spurs northwest through second-growth rainforest toward Tahsis and beyond to Zeballos. The road is maintained inconsistently — what’s graded smooth one week can be littered with washboard, blowdown, and fresh slides the next. The Zeballos River crossing is the crux: it’s bridged, but the approaches can deteriorate badly after rain. Watch for fully loaded logging trucks, especially on weekdays.

This is genuine high-clearance territory — a lifted 4WD with a locker and all-terrain tires is the minimum. A skid plate and extra fuel are non-negotiable; Zeballos has a small gas stop but supply is unreliable. Spring and early summer bring the worst mud, while late July through September offer the best road conditions. Cell service disappears completely past Gold River. Dispersed camping is available along the route, and Zeballos itself is a quiet fishing village worth the detour. You come here for isolation, coastal rainforest, and the satisfaction of reaching a corner of Vancouver Island most people never see.
