Nimpo Lake to Anahim Lake Pioneer Road
Pioneer route across the Chilcotin Plateau.
This route connects two of the Chilcotin’s most famous fishing destinations via the original pioneer road that opened the region to homesteaders in the 1930s. The track crosses rolling plateau country at 4,000 feet elevation, passing through aspen groves and meadows dotted with glacial ponds. Key landmarks include the Dean River crossing and the historic Anahim Lake airstrip where bush pilots still fly supplies to remote lodges. Several sections cross boggy ground that can be challenging in wet conditions.
Mostly easy to moderate 4WD, but high clearance essential for the rougher sections near Dean River. Stock vehicles can handle it in dry conditions, but expect mud holes and washouts during spring runoff and wet weather. Summer offers the best conditions and incredible wildflower displays. Fuel up in Nimpo Lake—next services are hours away. Excellent dispersed camping and world-class trout fishing make this a destination for anglers and anyone seeking authentic Chilcotin backcountry experience without extreme technical challenges.
