Homathko River Road

Into the heart of untamed Coast Mountain wilderness

Expert

The Homathko River Road penetrates 85 kilometers into the heart of the Coast Mountains, following an ancient First Nations trade route that later became a pack trail for prospectors heading to the Klondike. This narrow, single-track route clings to canyon walls above the glacier-fed Homathko River, crossing side creeks on sketchy log bridges and threading through massive rockslide zones. The road ends at Murderers Bar, where gold miners once wintered in dugout shelters still visible in the riverbank.

This is expert-level territory requiring serious preparation and self-rescue capability. Multiple river crossings can become impassable during heavy rain, and the road frequently washes out completely, stranding vehicles for weeks. Only attempt in late summer with a fully equipped 4×4, recovery gear, satellite communication, and at least a week’s supplies. Cell service doesn’t exist for 150+ kilometers. The payoff is accessing one of BC’s last truly wild places, where glacier-capped peaks rise 3,000 meters above pristine river valleys teeming with wildlife.
