Jones Lake Forest Service Road
Granite peaks and alpine solitude above Powell River
Jones Lake FSR branches off Highway 101 near Powell River, climbing 32 kilometers through old-growth forest and clear-cuts to reach Jones Lake at 3,600 feet. The final 8 kilometers are the real test — loose rock, steep switchbacks, and water bars that’ll high-center anything without serious clearance. Once you crest the ridge above Haslam Lake, the road drops into a granite bowl where Jones Lake sits like a mirror beneath Chapman Peak’s north face.
This is expert-level 4WD territory requiring high clearance, skid plates, and recovery gear. The road sees heavy industrial traffic weekdays — weekends only for recreational users. July through September offers the best conditions when snow clears and creek crossings drop to manageable levels. Dispersed camping around the lake puts you in true backcountry, with fishing for cutthroat and hiking access to the Sunshine Coast Trail. Bring everything you need — no services for 60 kilometers.
