Carpenter Lake East Shore Road

The east shore of Carpenter Lake cuts a narrow shelf between towering granite walls and BC Hydro’s reservoir, following an active logging road that’s been carved into the mountainside since the 1960s. You’ll thread through loose rock sections and creek crossings while dodging loaded logging trucks on blind corners—the horn becomes your best friend on this 40-kilometer route from the Hurley River FSR junction north to Gold Bridge. The Terzaghi Dam viewpoint at kilometer 15 offers a brief respite before the technical descent into Marshall Creek.

This is a moderate to difficult route requiring high-clearance 4WD, recovery gear, and nerves of steel when meeting industrial traffic. Best tackled April through October when the logging camps are active—paradoxically safer than winter isolation but requiring radio protocol and early morning starts. Fuel up in Pemberton and carry extra water; cell service dies after the first creek crossing. What you get is raw BC mountain country with glacier-fed lake views that’ll make you forget about the sketchy road-sharing experience.
