Cordillera Central Coffee Farm Military Road
WWII military road through abandoned coffee plantations
Built in 1942 as a strategic supply route between military installations, this forgotten road cuts through the heart of Puerto Rico’s coffee country. The route follows old plantation boundaries and military survey lines, passing dozens of abandoned coffee farms and their crumbling processing facilities. The most challenging section climbs the ridge between Cerro Morales and Cerro Las Flores, where washouts and landslides from Hurricane Maria still scar the mountainside.
Rated difficult due to steep grades, loose rock sections, and multiple stream crossings that can become impassable during heavy rains. You’ll need serious 4WD capability and winch recovery gear. Best attempted during the dry season from January through March when the coffee harvest roads are most stable. No permits needed, but notify someone of your route — cell service is nonexistent and this track sees maybe one vehicle per month. The isolation and historic ruins make it pure adventure gold.
