Cordillera Central Toro Negro to Villalba Summit Road

Cloud forest ridge run through radio tower maze

Expert

This demanding ridge road connects Toro Negro State Forest to the coffee highlands around Villalba, threading through some of Puerto Rico’s most remote mountain terrain. The route follows old forestry access roads and abandoned coffee plantation tracks, climbing through dense cloud forest before breaking out onto exposed ridgelines with sweeping views of both coasts. The technical crux comes at Cerro Maravilla, where you’ll navigate around massive radio installations and dodge maintenance roads that dead-end without warning.

Expert-level difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD with recovery gear—the route includes steep grades over 20%, loose limestone sections, and narrow passages between radio towers. Best tackled during dry season (December-April) when the cloud forest roads aren’t slick with moisture. No permits required, but fuel up in Villalba before starting. The payoff is legitimate wilderness solitude in the heart of Puerto Rico’s coffee country, with dispersed camping possible near the old Hacienda Mariani ruins.
