Quebrada de los Cedros to Río Grande de Manatí Circuit

Lost coffee plantation roads in Puerto Rico's wildest mountains

Extreme

Deep in the central mountains where GPS signals die and cell towers can’t reach, this loop connects two river valleys via crumbling plantation roads that haven’t seen maintenance since Hurricane Maria. The route starts at the ruins of Hacienda Los Cedros, where concrete processing tanks and rusted machinery tell the story of Puerto Rico’s coffee boom and bust. Stone bridges from the 1920s still span rushing creeks, though several require careful inspection before crossing with the weight of a loaded rig.

This is serious backcountry requiring winch-capable 4WD and recovery gear—expect multiple water crossings up to bumper height during wet season. The roads deteriorate significantly after the first major river crossing, with sections washed out completely where you’ll need to pick lines through boulder fields. Best attempted during dry months (January-March) when rivers run lower. Bring two days of food and water, plus a satellite communicator. The payoff is complete solitude in some of the island’s most pristine mountain wilderness.
