Cueva Ventana Limestone Ridge Technical Route
Limestone maze to the window cave.
This gnarly limestone scramble climbs the mogote formations above Arecibo, following old quarry roads and cattle tracks to reach Cueva Ventana’s back entrance. The route threads between towering limestone pillars and through narrow passages where flash floods have carved deep channels in the rock. Technical sections require careful line choice over sharp limestone edges and through tight spots barely wide enough for a standard-width vehicle. The payoff is access to cave systems and panoramic views across the Rio Grande de Arecibo valley that most tourists never see.
Difficult rating due to sharp rock, steep grades up to 35%, and tight maneuvering between limestone formations. Modified 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, and aggressive tires recommended. Wet limestone becomes extremely slippery – dry season (December-May) only. No permits needed but privately owned land requires permission from local operators. Bring multiple spare tires and a good jack. The limestone cuts through anything softer than all-terrain tread. No camping – this is a day trip from Arecibo.
