Monte Guilarte Radio Tower Summit Road
Technical summit assault through cloud forest
The access road to Monte Guilarte’s 3,950-foot summit is a punishing climb through some of Puerto Rico’s most pristine cloud forest, leading to a cluster of radio towers that have crowned this peak since the 1950s. The route begins innocuously enough on paved PR-518 near Adjuntas before turning onto increasingly rough forest service roads that snake upward through dense stands of sierra palm and tabonuco trees. Fog often shrouds the upper elevations, creating an ethereal drive through what locals call the elfin forest—stunted trees twisted by constant wind and moisture.
Difficult technical challenge requiring true 4WD with low range, aggressive tread tires, and preferably a winch. The final approach involves steep grades over loose rock and exposed bedrock that become treacherous when wet. Best attempted during dry season months when conditions are most stable, though even then expect mud and slippery sections. Only experienced drivers should attempt this route, but those who make it are rewarded with incredible 360-degree views on clear days, encompassing both coasts and the full sweep of the Cordillera Central.
