El Yunque Forest Road 988 (Caimitillo Trail)

Rainforest summit through the Caribbean's only temperate zone

Moderate

Forest Road 988 cuts through the heart of El Yunque National Forest, climbing 2,000 feet through dense rainforest canopy to the Caimitillo summit radio towers. The 8-mile route starts near the Yokahu Observation Tower on PR-191, immediately plunging into muddy switchbacks where tree roots create natural rock steps and seasonal streams cross the trail. The notorious “Mud Bowl” section at mile 4 has swallowed stock SUVs whole during wet season, while the final push to Caimitillo’s 2,750-foot peak requires careful line choice through boulder gardens.

This is legitimate moderate-to-difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with good approach angles — experienced drivers only. Trails stay slick year-round due to 240+ inches of annual rainfall, but dry season (February-April) offers the best conditions. No permits required, but respect closure signs during heavy rain events. The payoff includes sweeping views of the Caribbean and rare glimpses of El Yunque’s endangered coquí frogs echoing through pristine rainforest canopy.
