Franconia Notch State Park Old Bridle Path Service Road
White Mountain granite-crawling at its most brutal
This maintenance road splits off from the Franconia Notch Parkway and immediately starts punishing your undercarriage with granite ledges and loose rock that would make a billy goat think twice. The route climbs relentlessly toward the Old Man of the Mountain memorial area, passing through dense hardwood forest before breaking into stunted birch and finally alpine scrub. The real test comes at Greenleaf Hut access point where the road narrows to single-track with 500-foot drops on your passenger side and no guardrails to pretend they’ll save you.
This is expert-level New Hampshire granite crawling that’ll expose every weak point in your rig’s armor. You need serious armor plating, recovery gear, and a spotter who knows when to tell you to back down. Best tackled June through September when the frost isn’t heaving rocks loose every night. No permits needed but expect zero cell service and plan on spending a full day making the 8-mile round trip. The payoff is standing where few vehicles have been, looking out over the White Mountains like you own them.
