Baxter State Park Tote Road to Nesowadnehunk Field

Historic logging road to remote Katahdin basecamp

Difficult

The old Tote Road stretches 20 miles through Baxter State Park’s most remote section, following the route lumberjacks used to haul timber from the deep woods in the early 1900s. This primitive track winds through dense forest, crosses multiple streams, and ends at Nesowadnehunk Field with an unobstructed view of Mount Katahdin’s dramatic north face. The road passes the remains of old logging camps and crosses the Penobscot River on a seasonal bridge that’s removed each winter.

Difficult rating due to deep mud holes, rocky sections, and multiple stream crossings that can wash out the road base. Requires serious 4WD with good ground clearance, skid plates recommended. Only open June through September due to seasonal bridge installation and mud season restrictions. Park entry permits required and backcountry camping reservations essential. Bring full recovery gear including winch or come-along, shovel, and extra food since you’re 20 miles from help. The reward is Maine’s most pristine wilderness camping with Katahdin views that few ever see.
