Apostle Islands Ice Road Dispersed Area
This unique dispersed camping area becomes accessible only during harsh winters when Lake Superior freezes thick enough for vehicle traffic. Located on the south shore of Madeline Island, sites are scattered along old logging roads in mixed hardwood forest. The area offers complete solitude and stunning views across the frozen lake, but requires serious cold-weather preparation and knowledge of ice conditions.
Access depends entirely on ice road conditions maintained by locals – typically late January through early March in severe winters. High-clearance vehicles recommended for the rough island roads once you’re across the ice. No facilities whatsoever, and emergency services are extremely limited. Only for experienced winter campers who understand the risks of ice travel.
