Apostle Islands Sea Caves
These red sandstone caves stretch along the Bayfield Peninsula’s mainland shore, carved by centuries of Lake Superior waves. In summer, you’ll need a kayak to explore them properly — the water’s too deep to wade. But in winter, when the lake freezes solid, you can walk right up to and inside the ice-draped caverns. The formations change constantly as waves and weather reshape the soft sandstone.
Winter access depends entirely on ice conditions, usually late January through March in good years. Park at Meyers Beach and follow the shoreline trail north about a mile. Summer kayak rentals are available in Bayfield. The caves face northeast, so afternoon light creates the best photo conditions.
