Sawtooth National Forest Howell Canyon Dispersed Area
Howell Canyon cuts into the Raft River Mountains along the Idaho-Utah border, providing dispersed camping in a remote setting with minimal crowds. Eight to ten established sites line the canyon bottom among cottonwoods and sage, with a seasonal creek running through spring and early summer. Sites are well-spaced for privacy, most suitable for smaller to medium rigs due to narrow canyon access.
The 12-mile access road from Highway 84 starts paved but becomes rough dirt for the final 6 miles into the canyon. High-clearance recommended for the rocky sections. Water is seasonal and should not be relied upon. Area typically accessible April through November, with hunting season bringing temporary crowds in late fall.
