Little Missouri National Grassland Coal Creek Dispersed Sites

Dispersed Camping

Remote camping area in rolling badlands terrain near an exposed coal seam that occasionally smolders. Sites are informal pull-offs along Coal Creek Road with panoramic views of painted hills and prairie. The area supports 4-5 distinct camping spots with natural windbreaks from small coulees. Wildlife includes mule deer, pronghorn, and occasional elk. Fire restrictions often in effect due to coal seam activity.

Access via 8.3 miles of maintained gravel road from Highway 200, then 2.1 miles on Coal Creek Road. Road becomes challenging when wet—clay gumbo sticks to everything. Best visited during dry periods from late spring through early fall. No facilities or water sources, so come fully self-contained.
