Little Missouri National Grassland Magpie Creek Dispersed Sites
Magpie Creek cuts through colorful badlands terrain creating several camping opportunities along its seasonal course. Sites are tucked into small draws and flats where the creek has carved through layers of red scoria and clay. During wet periods, the creek provides a reliable water source, though it often runs dry by midsummer. The surrounding landscape is classic Little Missouri badlands — eroded buttes, exposed coal seams, and scattered juniper groves.
Access requires navigating unmarked ranch roads that can be confusing without GPS. Roads become treacherous when wet — the clay turns to slick gumbo that will strand any vehicle. Best accessed in dry conditions with high-clearance vehicles. No facilities or marked boundaries, so use Leave No Trace principles.
