Bighorn National Forest Medicine Mountain Dispersed Sites
Scattered primitive camping areas on the flanks of Medicine Mountain, within a few miles of the sacred Medicine Wheel site. Camping spots range from sheltered timber clearings to exposed ridgeline sites with 360-degree views across the Bighorn Basin. Elevation around 9,200 feet keeps nights cool even in summer. Sites typically have basic fire rings and can accommodate 2-3 vehicles each.
Access via Medicine Wheel Passage (Highway 14A) and Forest Road 12, with final approach on rough two-track requiring high clearance. Road closes with snow, typically October through June. Respect the sacred nature of the area — the Medicine Wheel itself requires a 1.5-mile hike and has specific visitation guidelines. Pack all water, none available on-site.
