Medicine Bow National Forest Sierra Madre Dispersed Area
Remote dispersed camping area spread across several ridgelines and meadows in the Sierra Madre mountains, accessed via Forest Road 801 and connecting two-tracks. Sites sit between 9,000-10,200 feet elevation with commanding views west into the Continental Divide country. Most spots can handle large rigs, though clearings vary in size. Popular base camp for elk hunters in fall, nearly empty rest of the year.
Road conditions deteriorate quickly above 9,500 feet — 4WD recommended for the higher sites. Weather can turn nasty fast at elevation, and snow possible any month except July-August. Water sources are seasonal springs and snowmelt, treat all water. Campfire restrictions typically in effect July through September.
