Black Hills National Forest French Creek Dispersed Area
This dispersed area follows French Creek through the valley where Custer’s 1874 expedition first discovered gold in the Black Hills. Sites are tucked between massive ponderosa pines with room for medium-sized rigs. Most spots have established fire rings and level parking areas. The creek runs year-round and provides decent water filtering opportunities. Popular with ATV riders and hunters during seasons.
Access from French Creek Road (Forest Road 361) southwest of Custer. The road is well-maintained gravel suitable for any vehicle, but some individual sites require short spurs on rougher track. Fire restrictions typically apply July through September. Sites fill up during Sturgis week and hunting seasons.
