This lesser-known national park protects some of Baja’s most impressive cardon forest, with specimens reaching 60+ feet tall and centuries old. The park centers on Arroyo San Bernardo, where indigenous petroglyphs mark water sources used for thousands of years. Hiking trails wind through the desert landscape, with the best petroglyph sites requiring a moderate 2-mile hike up the canyon.
Access is via a rough 8-mile dirt road turnoff from Highway 1, about 45 minutes north of La Paz. High-clearance recommended but not essential in dry conditions. No facilities or services—bring water and sun protection. The park sees few visitors outside of guided tours from La Paz, making it a quiet desert experience.
